Another Nail in the Coffin
As this is the most requested of all the videos that we've made thus far, Another Nail in the Coffin
can be considered the "best" video we've made. As much as I disagree (I personally think that On the
Edge of Enlightenment is the best video we've made), Another Nail in the Coffin is a very
fun video to watch. There a number of reasons that this is the case, not the least of which is the stunning
amount of 'stunts' that go on. Somewhere between the general craziness, lightbulbs smashed over heads, massive
shits, spitting in water glasses, attacks from Senor Sombrero, and fake wrestling you realize that deep down
inside what you really want to do is cover your face with
whipped cream and have a Mexican midget slap every little piece of it off you...just for the thrills (and for
the camera). What does everyone like about this video so much? Well, here's my two guesses. One of the things,
as I said before, is the stunts. They're crazy, fun to watch, hilarious, and hilarious. The other thing that
is different about this video is that there's a lot of non-skate footage that we got that looks really cool.
We were lucky enough to get footage of a helicopter landing while we were driving along the West Side Highway,
a burning car on 80 west coming into Jersey, some little kid piling out off a bank ramp, Dan in a graveyard with
a Crimson Ghost t-shirt on, and a bunch of other creepy and cool stuff. A lot of the footage looks like professional footy,
which is the main reason I think people like this one the most. Between the crazy, non-skate footage and the
stunts, this video came out a lot more like a professional video and a lot less like a normal Outlaw
Collective video. I chose Another Nail in the Coffin as the title because I thought of this video as
just another step along the way toward the destruction we were laying down on ourselves. Each video was a
marker on the highway to destruction....just another fuckin' nail in the coffin, brotha. In light of this title,
I decided that the wreck section should be highlighted. This is the first (but not the last) time that the wreck
section would earn its rightful place in the beginning of the video. Another thing that was new with this video
was the integration of the title into other footage. Just like a lot of videos run credits over other footage,
I ran the titles in between other footage, and it came out even better because the footage we got worked so well
with the title. This video was also the first one to have a 'friends' section...also filled with lots of stunts, mischief, and craziness.
The final, and most significant, new thing that was done in this video is I finally figured out how to mix the
music and skate sounds into the same soundtrack. I didn't figure this out until the video was almost done,
but I figured it out nonetheless. The only section that hadn't been finished yet was Andy's, so his is the
only one with the mixed sounds. It was such a fuckin' relief to finally have figured that out after almost
4 years of working on it. One of the things that I really LOVE about this video is it's the first one where
you can see everyone's style fully developing. If you look close, you can see styles coming out in Misbehave,
but realistically they aren't fully evident until this video. This video is the first time Andy has a long
but cool intro to his section (something that'll hold true up until Can You See?. It probably would
have been true of that one too, but that one didn't have conventional sections. It's the first video where
Derek steals the show; it's also the first video where Derek kills it with genius music selections. ......
I just took a break and re-watched some of the video and it occurs to me thus far that I haven't been being fair
to the video because I like On the Edge of Enlightenment more than this one. This video rocks hard. I've
been sort of playing that down. The music and riding are excellent. Everyone rips real hard in this one.
There's also the added bonus of, as I mentioned before, the inane amount of stunts. This video is worth it
just to witness Matt's mammoth turd alone; it has to have been at least half of his large intestine. Ok,
back to firsts. Derek's completely shaved head is new to this video. We acquired a new camera while working
on this one, so there's lots of camera effects that weren't there before, though this isn't particularly important.
That's about all I can think of for this one. If there's more, I'll just add it in later. I thought of something
more that might be interesting to know. In the last little piece of my section I try a few times to ollie
over a 9 stair handrail. I came so close (one of the tries I put in there was the close one...you'll see it),
but I never pulled it. I don't think I've ever tried a trick so long. By the time we left, my legs were so
sore that I couldn't walk back up the stairs to try it again. I'm not fuckin' around here either. Every time
I'd push up to it, I'd ollie just out of reflex and adrenaline. It was nuts 'cause after I finally gave up, we
were walking back to the car and my legs were so fucked up that they would periodically just give out and I
would just collapse onto the ground. That happened for the next day too. I've never really heard of legs
getting that tired, and I've never felt that again. It's a weird feeling when you're using all your willpower
to make your legs hold you up, and they just say 'no' and turn to mush. I'm even more pissed because over the
next year or two the sidewalk where I was landing got ALL fucked up somehow so I can't even go back and give it
another shot. It's completely gravelly, the pads of concrete are all uneven and cracked, and the transition
from sidewalk to road is totally messed up. Sometimes you win, sometimes you gotta lose. Lates.
